General Information

Kimbolton Castle, originally a medieval castle, underwent many changes before the Great Rebuilding by Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor and Adam, as the country house of the Dukes of Manchester. The Castle's most famous resident was Katharine of Aragon, who died here in 1536, and small sections of the Tudor house have survived. Although the Castle now belongs to Kimbolton School, visitors can still see the impressive range of State Rooms, with an outstanding set of murals by Pellegrini. A small Heritage Room houses displays on the Castle's history. The Castle is set in extensive, wooded grounds, with pleasant walks.

Visits

Kimbolton Castle is open to groups by arrangement throughout the year, including evenings, although access during Kimbolton School terms is restricted by School usage. During school holidays, requests for mid-week visits can usually be met.

The Castle is also open to the general public from 1 - 4 pm on the dates listed above. Members of Kimbolton Local History Society are on hand as room stewards, and short tours of the exterior take place at regular intervals. A children's animal, Tudor and Victorian trails and a dressing-up box are also available.

Admission Charges

The price for group tours is £ 4.00 per head, with a minimum charge of £ 60.00.

Public Opening charges :- Adults £ 4.00, OAPs £ 3.00, Children £ 2.00.

Group Size

The maximum group size is normally 70, but efforts will be made to accommodate larger groups.

Length of Tour

A tour of the interior of the Castle takes approximately 1½ hours. Groups who would like to be shown round the exterior of the Castle as well as the State Rooms are advised to allow at least 2 hours.

Facilities for Disabled Visitors

We regret that access to the State Rooms is difficult for visitors with limited mobility and that there is no wheelchair access. If advanced notice is given, the tour can be modified to reduce the number of stairs to be climbed. Laminated sheets outlining the main points of the tour are available on request for visitors with hearing difficulties.
Registered guide dogs are allowed in the grounds and State Rooms.

Toilets

Toilet facilities are available in the Castle.

Sales Items

Postcards, guidebooks and a limited range of souvenirs are on sale to visitors.

Surrounding Area

Groups wishing to spend longer in Kimbolton may enjoy a visit to St. Andrew's Church, a medieval building with later additions including monuments to the Montagu family and a Tiffany window. Guided tours are available by arrangement and village tours can also be arranged.

Other places of interest which can easily be combined with a visit to Kimbolton include Buckden Towers, The Manor (Hemingford Grey) and Grafham Water.
