Our Sixth Form pupils recently undertook the challenge of their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award assessment expedition, set amidst the stunning and rugged landscape of Northumberland. Over four days, they ventured across the Cheviot Hills, Kielder Forest and the moorland around the North Tyne and Hadrian’s Wall, overcoming both physical and mental challenges.
With 39 pupils split into six expedition teams, they followed different routes. Some headed north from Hadrian’s Wall towards Scotland, while others journeyed south from Scotland to the wall. This 50-mile trek through wild countryside required months of preparation. The pupils had undergone extensive training, careful planning and a practice expedition to prepare themselves for this demanding adventure. They carried all the equipment and provisions needed for four days and three nights, relying on teamwork and perseverance to complete the challenge.
The weather was far from kind, with heavy rain and strong winds adding to the difficulties. Navigating swollen streams and fallen trees made the journey even more demanding. However, our pupils rose to the occasion, displaying problem-solving skills, resilience and leadership —key attributes of the DofE experience. Through this hardship, they demonstrated empathy, tolerance, and kindness, while fostering a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility.
Throughout the expedition, the pupils were supported by a committed team of 13 staff members, including both school staff and freelance mountain leaders, who ensured their safety and well-being at every stage.
Most of the pupils have already completed the Volunteering, Skill, Physical, and Residential sections of their Gold Award and are now on the brink of finishing the Award. Their hard work will be recognised later this year at a special event at Buckingham Palace, attended by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
We are incredibly proud of their determination, strength of character, and teamwork in the face of tough conditions. This expedition has not only tested their endurance but also equipped them with valuable life skills that will serve them well beyond their time at Kimbolton School.
