Another superb theatrical production hit the stage last week here at Kimbolton School. Jesus Christ Superstar had been eagerly anticipated by staff and students alike, and it certainly lived up to all of our expectations. Spanning the last week of the life of Jesus, this vibrant rock musical was performed with all the energy and enthusiasm we’ve come to expect from a Kimbolton cast.
Forty talented performers from all the Senior School's year groups were supported by a full orchestral rock band. Pupils also took responsibility for the technical aspects of lighting and sound, back-stage direction and support, front of house and creation of a superb stage set.
Tom Howling took the lead, ably depicting the human side of Jesus with all his frailties and doubts. Similarly outstanding performances came from every one of the lead characters: Anna Munoz, as Mary Magdalene, sang and acted beautifully; Ben Rice’s rich and powerful bass was perfect for the menacing Caiaphas; Simon Carter was excellent as the tormented Judas and Sam Emery added a comedic touch as the camp King Herod. The talented ensemble also deserves praise for a fantastic portrayal of Jesus’ followers, lepers, guards and priests, whilst Ella Grant’s choreography added a real vitality to the show.
With its memorable melodies such as ‘Everything’s alright’, ‘I don’t know how to love him’ and, of course, the iconic signature tune, the show had something for everyone and received well-deserved standing ovations from packed audiences. Congratulations to everyone involved!
