Winning Moves for Prep Chess Team

Our Prep chess players have made a great start in this year’s Cambridgeshire Schools Chess Championships.

Cambridge Schools Chess ChampionshipsOur Prep chess players have made a great start in this year’s Cambridgeshire Schools Chess Championships, with Kimbolton currently in 9th place on the League Table, out of 24 teams.

The Championships consist of a series of six meetings over the academic year 2015-16, with each school team of six pupils playing two matches at each event.

With 19 schools (some with two teams) taking part in this year’s competition, Kimbolton team members Tom Gurnell, Charlie Hadden, Lawrence Li, Sam Moerman, Joseph Phillips-Stokes, Owen Pope, Trinity Pollard-Strutt and Toby Summerfield have so far battled it out on the boards in two sessions against pupils from St Faith’s (A and B), St Bede’s and Cherry Hinton.

Kimbolton team manager Mrs Jenny Edwards said: “This is a great start for us, as this is the first time we have entered the Championships. At the second session, on 14 November, our players improved on their previous performance to win eight out of their twelve matches. Special mention must go to Sam Moerman (Year 5), our top scorer, who has so far won all four of his contests.”

With four more sessions to go in the Championships (12 Dec, 16 Jan, 5 March and 30 April), watch this space for updates on our players’ progress!
