The 'Purple Paddlers' Line Up for Marathon Canoe Challenge

Double award winning canoe team lines up for gruelling 125-mile race.

Good luck to the 'Purple Paddlers', our marathon canoe team that will be attempting the formidable 4-day, 125-mile Devizes to Westminster (DW) Race over the Easter weekend.

The Fifth and Sixth Formers have been training for this event since September, with technique and fitness sessions alongside canoeing practices. Over alternate weekends from January to mid-March they participated in the Waterside Series, a four-race competition that follows the route of the DW. Completing the Series is an achievement in itself, requiring not just physical strength and canoeing technique but also the mental strength to not concede.  Over the 125-mile route, there are 111 portages - the carrying of the boat to the next navigable stretch of water.

Our team of Archie Brocklebank, Will Day, Fiona Denton, Ed Gray, Griffin Giles, Matt Harrington, Michael Lee, Michael Millington, Peter Salkield, Rebecca Stairs (Captain) and Tom Wilson, won both the School Team Trophy (competed for by the participating schools) and also the Junior Team Trophy (for which canoe clubs also qualify).

This was a tremendous result and bodes well for the DW.  Good luck to the team and their (parent) support crews!
