Getting The Most From Your Lessons

Below are some tips to ensure you get the best value for your child(ren) from our swimming lessons.

    • Starting swimming lessons is a big step for many children. If baby lessons did not feel right in the early stages starting when your child is a bit older is no bad thing, there is no wrong time to learn.

    • Before your child's first lesson visit the pool to familiarise them to the water environment. Talk through with your child exactly what they should expect during their lesson. Take your child swimming as much as possible before lessons and after they have started lessons. This will greatly help them to develop water confidence and practise their swimming away from the class.
    • Ensure your child/children arrive at the pool in enough time to get changed so they arrive on poolside before the lesson starts. This will help them to better focus on their lesson and not miss the start of the class.
    • Goggles are not essential for children in the lessons. Make sure your child has a pair of good quality goggles. Your child’s goggles should be adjusted and correctly fitted before the lesson starts. Problems with goggles leaking will not help a child to relax and concentrate on their lesson.
    • To maintain water quality children should always shower before going into the swimming pool. Please encourage your child to shower at every pool before swimming.
    • To prevent disruption in the classes please ensure that your child has visited the toilet before the start of their lesson.

    • Make sure you child arrives on time for the start of their lesson.

    • Parents can actively support their child in their lessons through regular trips to the swimming pool as a family, this will build their confidence and help ensure a successful and memorable learn to swim experience. Encourage them to practise the skills they have been taught; it will also enable them to show you what they have learnt.
    • Try and make a visit to a pool a regular part of your family’s weekly activities. Many pools have special discounted prices for families. All Kimbolton Senior and Prep School pupils are entitled to discounted swimming at our pool. Kimbolton School Swimming Pool also offers non-pupils/families a special discounted price - a mother and father together with up to 3 three children can swim for only £12.50 (from 1st January 2020)

    • Work at teaching your child to practise holding their breath, children can find it difficult to master this skill; often they continue to try and breathe and swallow water. This in turn can make it very difficult later for a child to want to put their face into the water; an essential skill when learning to swim.

    • Use bath/shower time to encourage your child to get their face, head and hair wet.

    • Ensure that your child(ren) are aware that they must behave correctly during their lessons. Poor behaviour will disturb the lesson and your child will not learn to swim. Safety in the pool is paramount, any child who continuously disrupts the lessons will be returned to their parents or guardian.
