    Mathematics Entrance Examination

    Notes for Guidance: 11+

    The purpose of the Mathematics Entrance Examination is to assess a pupils current level of mathematical ability and understanding. It is hoped that the examination will be a positive experience for all candidates testing what they know rather than highlighting what they do not know.

    Much of the content of the examination has been developed from the Year 6 National Numeracy Strategy programme of study. This should mean that all candidates, irrespective of their current school, have studied most of the concepts being assessed. The problems are a mixture of direct theory and problem solving tasks. The questions cover all areas of Mathematics, namely Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Data Handling although number work is the key skill being assessed. 

    Calculators are not allowed in the test. It will contain two main sections, A is 15 multiple choice (Q1 an example is below) and B longer questions that will each be worth more than one mark (Q16 below) and credit will be given for accurate methods even if the final answer is incorrect. There is also an extension section.  Pupils wil be put in temporary sets based on the entrance examination until more data is acquired.

    No special tutoring is required to successfully complete the examination.
