Kimbolton School Sailing Team at Grafham WaterCaptained by Tara Butterfield, eight Kimbolton pupils took part in Bart’s Bash on 21 September, a new global sailing race organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. The event attracted over 18,000 participants of all ages and abilities, in 68 different countries.

Bart's Bash was set up in memory of Olympic gold medallist and America’s Cup sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, to inspire the next generation of sailors, to encourage clubs to open their doors, and to raise money for the Foundation’s charitable programmes.

The Kimbolton crews donned fancy dress to join a huge fleet of other competitors in a friendly race at Grafham Water, which offers some of the finest inland sailing in the country.

School Outdoor Pursuits Instructor Tom Webster said: “The sailing team have been training hard, starting with very little racing experience, each training session has pushed up the ability levels.

“Bart’s Bash was the perfect event to showcase the newly formed team. The Kimbolton crews exceeded expectation in every way and sailed to a very high standard in challenging conditions.

“The event was the first race for many of our members, the fun and relaxed atmosphere of the event allowed for a truly great day on the water. The team are committed to pushing for success and are using every race and training session to practice and perfect their skills.”

Richard Percy, CEO of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, added: “The turnout exceeded our expectations and we are very happy that we provided a truly global opportunity for people to come together and enjoy sailing. We hope this event will become a regular feature in the global sailing calendar.”

Senior School pupils have the opportunity to represent Kimbolton at events around the country and against other schools. The team has had many successes and receives coaching during timetabled Games lessons and when not competing.

Our wide range of dinghies, based at Grafham Water, includes Laser Picos for the beginner, Dart 16 Catamarans, Laser 2000s, and the Junior Olympic Class Boat, the 29er. Pupils also have the opportunity to take RYA qualification courses.

Here’s wishing the best of luck to our sailing team as they compete in the Winter Club Series at Grafham Water Sailing Club; four races are held each Sunday where the team are getting to grips with the various aspects of racing in a competitive fleet.
