In-Form Jemima Powers to UK No 1!
First Form athlete heads UK rankings for U13 Girls’ 1500m.
First Form athlete Jemima powered to the top of the UK rankings for U13 Girls’ 1500m, following a spectacular performance at the Rugby Open meeting earlier this month (5 Sept 20). The 11 year old, who runs for Kettering Harriers and represents Kimbolton at school events, set an official time of 4:57.8 to claim the number 1 spot – all the more impressive as she is one of the youngest in the two-year age category.
Jemima had been upgraded to the U15B race to ensure she had some good competition, and this paid off with a superb race to finish in 4th place overall. With a second full season in the U13 age group yet to come, she clearly has the potential to progress further (and indeed has already run 4:52.82 in a time trial). The talented Ingrams pupil also ran 800m a week earlier in cold, wet and windy conditions to set a terrific time of 2:28.3 to sit in 16th place in the UK rankings.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jemima’s training has been difficult over the past few months. She is delighted to be back in action and commented: “It’s great to be training and racing with other people again. This was the first time I’d officially run 1500m in under five minutes and it was an amazing feeling to make it to No 1. I’ve hopefully got a few more races this season; next year my aim is to keep improving my time in the 1500m and also to move up the rankings for the 800m.”
